U87 capsule
« on: March 02, 2011, 04:58:29 AM »
...got to remove the capsule from the head basket of a U87 - how does one go about getting it out without breaking the little low cut and -10dB switches?

oh, and are the capsules of m269 and u87 by any chance interchangeable?

1) You just carefully jiggle it around - gently does it, almost as if by magic it comes out.

2) Newer U87A, yes. Older U87(non-A), no.

thanks for the info, I already wiggled it for about 15 min with no success, but I'll have another go at it!

unfortunately it is a 70ies u87i P48 model, I was a bit careless while working with some spray glue in the studio and well, I just wanted to take a look at the capsule to see if it caught some of that nasty sticky stuff...

Hi Marten!

Unfortunately I never remember in which order but It helps to set the switches in some position, then jiggle, one switch comes out, change the position of the remaining switch, jiggle some more, and bingo!

Even if the glue didn't reach the capsule, chances are that the basket grill is affected... Once you get the capsule assembly out, it may be time for an ultrasonic bath of the headbasket.

Hold the basket in one hand, and the base unit with the other. Using the cut switch side as the fulcrum, bend the base unit till the top of the capsule touches the side of the basket inside. This should free the edge with the pattern switch on it. You can then ease this edge sideways out of the headbasket, and the cut switches will come free. Put pressure on so that there is no pressure on the cut switches, they break easily. There is a rubber bush in the capsule mount which allows some bending when the top of the capsule touches the basket.

I do it the same as Axel. If you turn the switches 'in', then it slips out quite easily. No need to force anything!

Detailed instructions on how to do this are posted on Pro Sound Web in Klaus Heyne's forum.

ok, thanks everybody, it wasn't so hard after all, there is no force necessary and the capsule slips out easy once you get the hang of it. Also good news, the capsule looks "like new", maybe I'll give the basket a u-sonic bath some time, but for now everything is working fine. I got so used to my API preamps that when I hooked up the U87 to the board preamps for a quick check I thought the mic was wrong, amazing!

cheers, Marten
