If you what to display gain reduction use a dual vactrol and take a look how it is done in the LA-4A http://www.waltzingbear.com/Schematics/Urei/LA_4A.htm
You can also use a mA meter with VU scale no real VU meter required.

It's very easy to add a GR LED-meter in the Weak jo compressor :
Unfortunately, there is no Vactrol in my compressor but 3 Silonex NSL32SR3,
One for gain reduction, another for the bias, the last one (noted "1" in the schematic) drives a 6 LED meter with a gain potentiometer.
Some resistors need to be changed because the Silonex opto-resistors are not equivalent to the Vactrol; the modified schematic :
