Thanks to some wonderful pictures from Peter Purpose, I was able to fabricate the pcb mounting rails and the transformer mounts. It doesn't look like much, but it took alot of time and effort!
 
Very nice! It's one of the first pics (the first pic actually..) I see of this 1081 DIY project.
May I ask, how are tho others doin'?

Yeah, I was not sure. Franks pics where the first alright.
BUT there where a lot of people who joine several groupbuys (knobs, pcb's, swiches) for this project.....

I got a lot more done over the past week. The motherboard is completely stuffed now. I fabricated the front sub-panel and rear panel. Time to finish wiring up those switches and opamps!

I haven't been paying close attention to this - where did the front panels come from?
 
I purchased the faceplates from a Neve parts dealer. I don't remember off the top of my head, but I can look it up if you are interested. I got the impression that they had more...
 
Did your amp pins line up with the 312 main card? Is there anyone else taht has BA312 cards other than tommytones?

I proposed the concept in Frank's thread. Essentially, drilled out the center of some potentiometer shafts, drilled and tapped a set screw hole, sanded down the tip of an 1/8" rod (for the knob), and viola!

I will order some potentiometers this week - so I hope I can work on the 1081 again. I'd been told that the preamp section and the BA338 is working.


Regarding a frontpanel... I think I will use a 19" Frontpanel and a second panel for the switches behind the first one (just like the original...) and fit the second panel with brackets to the case or so.

Iam using a similar methode lik ToroRojo did on the pictures above. So I don't need any long shaft. Iam using 6mm potentiometers and this:

The problem is that a standard 4mm shaft will not fit. Maybe 3,8mm or 3,6mm or so. I don't like to spend much money on potentiometers which're hard to get. With using standard potentiometers I can easily replace them. Also the 1081 pots are center detend, right? I use alphastat potentiometers. (formerly preh).

I got the preamp and output stages working. Now onto finishing the eq sections. This pic shows it with the lpf/hpf and low freq. switches installed.

I must have made a mistake while wiring the gainswitch. When set to the +15 line position, the audio disappears. All other positions appear to work. I haven't done any extensive testing yet. Just a couple of sine waves and some program material.

The leds on the eq and solo switches have burnt out twice now. The original schematic calls for 100R resistors for current limiting. After the first burnout, I bumped these up to 1k, but they still burnt out (they lasted a little longer this time tho). It's kinda a bitch to change them out, so I'm going to put that off for a bit.


My workbench is a mess.

Here's the rack as it currently stands. Only ch. 2 is hooked up and phantom power is nonexistant at this point. I also need to figure out how to secure the modules in the rack unit.

Where did you get those led switches for the bypass/eq/solo...?

You may want to check resistors coming off P4
I believe they are a 68k1 and 12k they feed the gainswitch.
These are not on the original motherboard, and I believe they bring down the gain from the Transformer, you may want to check those before you check your gainswitch. I had the same problem so I bypassed them and got lots more gain.
 
The eq/solo/ph switches are just ITT F series switches. I custom made mounting brackets with a dremel and some pliers.

I've didn't wire up the 68k1 and 12k resistors, I soldered the gain switch directly to the transformers instead of going through P6 and P7, and the problem only occurs at the +15 line setting. It should be very easy to track down.

I'm not familiar with this project, but assuming it runs from +24V like the other N*ves, that 1k will give you 24mA thru the LED. Most are rated for 20mA, so I can see why it gave up eventually. Modern LEDs are pretty efficient (photons per mA is high), so I usually run at 10mA or so. Try 2k (12mA) or 2k4 (10mA). Lifetime will be greatly extended!

My workbench is a mess.

That looks pretty neat to me! I'm finishing up a 312 project--will post bench photos then. I think it's about time for another round of "messiest bench contest."
