Hello,

I'm wondering if someone have tried a DIY shotgun mic ala Senheiser MKH 416? Where can I start from?

Thanks in advance.

If i'm not mistaken the MKH416 is kinda hard to DIY. It's not a normal condenser but works with rf-frequencies. Seavote wanted to diy another mic from the mkh range some weeks ago. You might PM him for info.

As far as i know there's nothing very special electronically about shotgun mic's. Its all in the body and capsule design. So you should be able to make a shotgun mic from the other mic designs floating around here.

The phase tube is gonna be tricky to make aswell as the electronics. All those slats in exactly the right place critical to the shotgun pick up on the 416. Surely youd be better off getting a old t power 416 or 415 off of ebay

I've heard of one being made using dozens of "drinking straws" of different lengths, and a tube/pipe with slots cut into it's sides.

Of course it looked like crap, and it was the size of a howitzer... but it worked.

If you want something that looks good and that you don't have to defend every time you produce it, you can't make one without basically setting up a factory... which is why you buy a Sennheiser... it's cheaper!

For interference tube, start at H.F.Olson: Acoustical Engineering.
Foh HF principle start at good textbook about parametric amplifiers.
Maybe will be useful original Griese s paper:
