I finnished some time ago controll room module
for mastering console, uP-controlled, passive,balanced,
with stand-alone controller...
total is about 90 Teledyne 712 relays...see lo-res pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v436/IJR/12082006012.jpg
Functions are:
4 monitors each with offset
12 inputs each with offset
Digitally controlled balanced relay attenuator 0...-127.5 db
step 0.5 db absolutely clickless
4 inserts
5 points to listen inserts
dim (user-defined)
talkback, user-defined latch time and dim level
mono-sum
mono-diff
mono-l
mono-r
swap l-r
4 presets for storing snapshots

The main thing it came up very versatile in controll
and absolutely clean in audio...

At this time, I working on controll room module
for medium-budget studios.
Please your input: what is necessary, what is not?
I think 4 inputs enough, maybe 5th for situation
if we need to play say cd+keyboards...
Selector which goes to record independantly
from monitor can be wery helpfull too...
3 monitors...talkback, dim, offsets on inputs/monitors...
mono-l, mono-r,mono l-r...minimum electronics, all passive...
but option for balanced buffer should be there...
seems 0.5 db steps is overkill, 1 db is pretty good enough...
Look on this pcb, it is audio board for one channel,
pl/xlr inputs and reletively cheap Aromat etc relays:

Ideas???
People interested in kits? PCB's?

A few of us are working on things like this as it is a very needed thing for those with DAWS and no mixing desk with a Control Room Section.

Passive or Active with switches or relays abd the uP controller ... PIC
lots of possibilities ... the BurrBrown Chip for volume control.
and it does seem to be difficult to keep everybody happy.

I think that the more complex it gets the more it needs to be modular so you can build in a variety of final products
and
make changes to a finished product
and so
the uP remote controller need to be user configurable. This is where it all gets hard unless you can build some programmability into the desktop remote unit.

good luck

good to see you about and hope you are well.

Well... its just perfect.

One of my biggest wishes is MIDI Timecode controlled talkback!...that is on when the DAW is not in play or record and automatically switches off when it is in play or record. Jacob "Gyraf" Erland made a system in their studio years ago based on SMTPE from 2" machines (at least I think that was how it worked  ) and I've been missing it ever since i tried it and got used to it. But haven't been able to find such a system!!!

Theres a description of how it's done (with smtpe in analog) in the Mixerman diaries (wierdly enough).

My memory is a little sluggish, and i haven't the time to go hunting through the diaries online...

Essentially, it can be done with a noise gate, using the smpte as the sidechain input. However, I can't think of how you'd stop the gate from opening when the signal was present (you'd need the opposite I think)...
