I'm making a few more SSL's and I would like to use connectors and preferably a 10 pole ribbon cable between the two pcb's.

I haven't been able to locate these parts at digikey or mouser and was wondering if someone could help.

thanks!

Chris

Farnell have some pin and socket combinations that might suit.
When I do use pins I use a modular thing that comes in long lengths that can be broken to any length.
The crimp tool is very expensive though.
My units have been soldered first and then screwed into the box.
It does make things more reliable and these things should break down so servicing need not be high on your agenda.

Thanks Kev...I had some problems with my first one in that area with the individual wires soldered in breaking off. If you have to do some trouble shooting and take the pcbs out and move them around its not good.

hmmm...anybody else have any insights or ideas regarding this?

yep
some hook up wire can be like that at the soldered ends.

now that you have a better understanding of how it all fits together the trouble shooting may not be required so it could work out ok.

It will also save a little cash.
and be more reliable if you are travelling .

fine
just buried in emails at the moment.

and navigating a three way Union war.

I found the 5 and 10 pin connectors (male and female) at Digikey...

WM4203-ND: 5 Pin Straight-Friction Lock Header
WM4208-ND: 10 Pin Straight-Friction Lock Header
WM2014-ND: 5 Pin Center Crimp Terminal Housing w/ Locking Ramp
WM2019-ND: 10 Pin Center Crimp Terminal Housing w/ Locking Ramp
WM2200-ND: Crimp Terminals 22-30AWG Tin

This should do the trick. I think it's from page 88 of the catalog.

All Electronics has a 10 pin connector prewired that includes the part that goes on the pcb as well. It's about three bucks, & in my opinion it's worth a bit extra not to have to attach the wires yourself. They're in Van Nuys, or their web site is allelectronics.com

It's not ribbon cable, though. Just regular wire.

Here's where I get mine. http://www.futurlec.com/Connectors.shtml

Cheap Cheap Cheap.

But their web site is slow slow slow.

Cheers,

Just to follow up:

The parts I listed above worked great for connecting the Main PCB to the Control PCB and I/O. I'll post some pics soon. The only thing is that the connector for the output needed to shaved down a little b/c it didn't clear one of the caps. Regarding the crimping, I didn't... I just soldered onto the tab and bent the ends over the wire. Then the ends easily slide and lock into the housing. All points showed continuity. I'll be testing my unit in a day or two.

I've tried other connectors in some others diy projects :
The "problem" is that crimping tools and contacts are always expensive but I've bought one from Reichelt (German shop)
http://www.reichelt.de/inhalt.html?SID=14P-xZ8tS4AQ4AAALmbpg41f8906d9f43c0fb9fe0fa6dc9091b62;ACTION=3;LASTACTION=4;SORT=artikel.artnr;GRUPPE=D325;WG=0;SUCHE=CRIMPZANGE%20PSK;ARTIKEL=CRIMPZANGE%2520PSK;START=0;END=16;STATIC=0;FC=667;PROVID=0;TITEL=0

I also bought some connectors : make a search "PSK 254"

I've also tried some FCI connectors (http://www.fciconnect.com), bought them at Schuricht (http://www.schuricht.com) also cheap (but you can find them at Farnell & Mouser).
About mouser.com , they sell molex and amp/tyco (http://www.amp.com) products.

Best regards,
Xsou

[quote author="gyraf"]I use the "crimp" type connector inserts - but without the crimping tool, simply soldering on them. Works really nice.

Me too... I think it works great.

The problem with http://www.futurlec.com/Connectors.shtml
is it will take you 6 weeks to receive your order!! The connectors
are nice and cheap cheap cheap though. They also make PCBs
from gerbers cheap cheap cheap. Has any one used them?
