I started a new post to address North American parts suppliers specifically. My goal is to come up with a complete list of parts for the SSL Compressor for those of us in North America. Like Kev's page, I would like to get a page up (maybe with the help of hairyandy if he's interested) that has the supplier and part number for all of the pieces needed to make the kit...with the exception of the VCA perhaps, unless we come up with a stable resource for these. That way, we can point a link from the Meta there, and we'll answer a lot of these questions before they even happen.

The problem I'm having with Kev's list is that Jaycar seems to list the parts differently than DigiKey or Mouser. Both DigiKey and Mouser seem to list them with more specs. I'm relatively new to this stuff, so more specs makes me nervous...and I don't want to get stuck with the wrong parts.

Here's where I'm stuck:

Semiconductors:

I can't seem to find just a plain NE5532 on Mouser or Digikey. Anyone have any recommendations here? This is my first time ordering op-amps, so it's a sea out there. I see tons of ne5532 designations, but all are followed by a letter, such as D or something. I guess I'm having the same problem with the TL072, TL074, and NE5534-AN as well. I'm not understanding all of the suffixes after the main number (like TL072ID). What does the ID mean?

The Rectifier:

Next, for the W04 Rectifier, will this part work:

http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?handler=displayproduct&lstdispproductid=237465&e_categoryid=236&e_pcodeid=62504

Regulators:

Can anyone steer me in the right direction here? I was on Digikey, and it looks like there's several possible candidates for the job, so that scares me. Does anyone have their parts lists available that ordered in the states? I promise when I'm done, I'll put a website for this, and include part numbers and everything in return for the favors, so in the future we can direct people to that site for help with the parts...

Oh, and if I'm using the wrong terminology, please correct me. Electronics is still a very distant second language to English for me...

Thank you!

I have a 2 spreadsheets that may be useful... One that I got from another member here and one I created myself. Forward your e-mail and I'll get them to you.

Hey Tubejay,

I'm definitely interested and will help any way I can. I still haven't sourced all my parts yet either so it'll be a great help to me as well. I've already got a website up and running and could have a page up that we could link to in no time...

Semiconductors:

Reading the datasheet for each device helps shed light on the meaning of the numerous suffixes. I know. It is tedious and time consuming. For the NE5532 or NE5534 try to buy the ones with the A designation such as NE5532AN and NE5534AN. They are sorted for lower noise and some other parameters. For the TL074 as long as you get the 8 pin DIP package it should work.

Regulators:

Look for the ones in TO220 or TO220AB packages. There are minor differences between different designators.

Here's my parts list, from both Digikey and Mouser, minus resistors, meters, VCA's, 4148 Diodes and IC Sockets. Also, the 100nf Polyester caps were a tight fit but they DID fit. You might want to find something smaller.. Double check everything!

Are the resistors 1/4 watt or 1/2 watt. I have 2 different parts lists and not enough experience to know which I need. I'm trying to compile an "idiots" list to the clone for use in the USA :guinness: :sam: . :?:

hairyandy:

That sounds fantastic. From the list everyone has sent to me, I think I have found every part at either Mouser or Digikey, with the exception of the VU, PCB, and VCA's. Once I get my stuff (I placed Digikey order yesterday, and the Mouser order is going out today) I'll make sure it's the right stuff, and then send you a completed list. Maybe we could then go through them and use what we think is best. Then if we could get one of the DIY masters to take a look at our list and let us know if we should change anything...that would be very cool indeed.

Jickel:

If you look at Kev's Jaycar numbers on Jaycar, it will give you the watts. If you look at Kev's list, I believe everything from the 10R resistors to the 1M resisitors are all 1/2 watt. Everything after that is listed at 1/4 watt.

Could someone explain the implications of going higher or lower on the wattage ratings, please? If I put in greater wattage resistors, what happens? If I go lower, what happens? For my order, I just copied exactly what Kev had.

Thanks!

Cool. I'll even make each part a link so it's stupid easy to get an order together. I'm leaving to fly across the pond next Wednesday, 6/16, so if you're done before then it'd be great. If not, it might take me a while 'cuz I'll be working over in the U.K. for about two weeks.

Thanks! :guinness:

[quote author="gyraf"]Every resistor in the ssl-clone can be 1/4W, with the possible exception of the two 10R's that could be 1/2W.

Is there any negative impact with going with a higher rated wattage?

Are you guys using the 1% metal film resistors or 5% carbon? I wanted to use all metal film, but after looking at mouser and digikey I realized some values were hard to find.

Any opinions?

Thanks

I used 1% Metal Film, but I orderd them from Jaycar, not Digikey or Mouser. If you look at page 908 of the Digikey Catalog, they have a huge selection of the 1% Metal Film manufactured by Pheonix Passive Components, but I don't think they keep them in stock. And I've never checked with them to see how long it would take.

I ordered Xicon Metal Film 1% 1/2 Watt from Mouser. They had all but one of the values I needed, which was the 510K, so I just ordered that one from Digikey in the 5% variety. I ordered ten of them, and whichever is the closest to 510K, is the one I'll use!

Here's a link to one of them, to help you out:

http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?handler=displayproduct&lstdispproductid=331526

Only downfall with Mouser and that brand, is that you have to order ten of each, and they seem more expensive than others...

Hey hairyandy,

I take it that since we're using a switch that has a light/or led in it, we don't need the power LED listed on Kev's list??? Is that right???
