Hi everybody

I wanna share my little experience
with the differents capsules in the G7.

i don't have sound clips now, but
when i could, i post it.

So. with my differents capsules tests
(Peluso CEK367, Peluso CEK12, Neumann TLM103 Capsule, Blue Cactus)
i obtain 4 uniques sounding mics !
i think the capsule is responsible of 90% of the final sound
if the construction is good.

So, be sure of your capsule choice, i know it's hard, but
it's the key to the success :thumb:

Gus has repeatedly mentioned that provided you have a decent circuit most of the sound is a combination of the capsule and body/grill. It would be cool to have software to simulate 'wind' diffusion through different grill screens and compression/rarefaction between the inside of the grill and capsule, to really "see" what's going on.

For me (subjective)
the two better capsules are the
CEK-12 & the Cactus.

the CEK-12 sound more "aggressive"
more "in your face"
and have a really old school scrapy bottom. (scrapy ?)

the Cactus sound more "soft"
really sweet and natural high with
a round bottom end and lot of proximity effect.

it's impossible to me, to say which is better :?
i love both.

the TLM & CEK-367, have the same style as the Cactus
but sound worse to me. (center terminated sound ??)

I always find it interesting using different parts in the same microphone.

Now the fun part is how grills change the sound. I guess you can understand why I can't give a good answer sometimes. I need to do many more tests.

FWIW IIRC SPA wrote about the capsule grill interaction years ago in MIX. And I an fairly sure people/companys who build microphones have know about it for decades(10s of years)

I like this thread Jazzy_Pidjay use 4 capsules in one microphone in a somewhat controlled manner and gave us some usefull feedback

Hi Gus

I planning to order new mesh from Mc Master Carr

So i think i can understand the effect of the grill very soon
and give my feedback to the lab.

Cool J-P!
I wonder if you could figure out a way to do the Korby thing where you can just plug in the different capsules without rewiring everything. Now that would be cool, eh?
:thumb:

my design/conception is finish so i can't
change the capsule each time i want.

i change it regulary because it's my testing period.
and i'm afraid of loose sound quality with connector
at the capsule. :?

during a test, the welding was bad and i realize
how the contact at this point is crucial. the sound was
moody and without high-frequencies.

i have also test different tubes (NOS Siemens, Amperex, Mullard)
but the difference is not so important.
i have a small preference for the Amperex (more rough), the Siemens
sound more neutral, and the Mullard a bit too bright to me.

I'm going to build two G7's soon and were just thinking of putting in CEK-12 capsules in them....do they sound harsh? Or do they sound Sweeeet  ?

I just want great microphones ..as good as you can get :green:
I know that sound stupid...what grill/microphone body did you use? I was thinking of bying some really cheap microphones and use their body's and grills to make everything easier, maybe a bad idea? Check these pics (TSM MT47):

Good grill, bad :?:

The TSM MT47 mic might be a great unit to start modifying into a G7, as it has quite some space inside, it has a tube socket, it comes with a powersupply with both heater and HT voltage..

The grille dosen't look bad at all.

Great! I don't know if it would be easier to just take away what's inside and put in a new card and such or to mod it?
One thing I'm wondering about....if I don't want to have the TSM MT47 writing on the microphone body can I take it away without making everything look bad with amoniac ór so? Or do I have to paint it? Spray paint?

to me the CEK-12 doesn't sound harsh
but doesn't sound sweet.

the bottom & medium are beautiful
and the high, is a bit more hard
with some sibilance sometimes.

but it's a great capsule,
unique in this price range
and with a personnal sound.

(better than the CEK-367 to me)

definitively the G7-CEK12 is my main vocal microphone.
the G7-Cactus is the main vocal mic of my friend

two great mics !!!

thanks Jakob :thumb:

Yeah, I guess that I can't get att capsule like the Cactus for a resonalbe sum of money!? Now I'm thinking of building either two G7's with diffirent capsules or a stereo pair...hard hard.....thanx for all you help by the way  !
