Simple headphone amp
« on: February 22, 2012, 03:35:49 AM »
Hi!

How can I build a simple headphone amp?

A little like this:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_hp1_headphone_amp.htm

I'll just double the inputs to have 2 independent stereo-channels (with an option to let stereo1 go to stereo2)

I guess basically what I need is a bal-to-unbal-card, a type of amp and a pot, right?
I'm not aiming for those hifi-amps, just some budget quality for my monitoring.

Thanks!

Check out this site.

Although lots of them are rather fancy!

And the I need some bal-to-unbal circuit ? Like this: http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=29333.0

I'd like the DC to be 15V,
maybe something like this would be fine:

?
Or, would you recommend me a design with another IC?

Hi!

How can I build a simple headphone amp?

Hi,

I highly recommend Joe's Headamp (JLM Audio).
Easy to build and tons of power, and dead quiet!
Have built several of them and I'm very happy with these babies.
There is a good build thread with some pretty hints to add on things like mute, mono or even a small passive mixer with just a few parts additionaly!Cool stuff!

Cheers,

Udo.

Well, isn't that just spot on :)
Glad I asked here, or I wouldn't have found it. Thanks!

Now, what opamp to use for 15V ?

Just 15v, or +- 15v?

+- 15VDC
But, maybe I'll just order a powerstation with the Headamp, then I have two extra rails :)

Hi,
me again.

Have done mine all with opa2604 running from +/-24vdc,so if you're about to build a psu can go the powerstation way.
On the other hand you can use any dual op amp as stated in the thread as long as it is pin compatible and able to drive loads of 600 Ohms or lower. So on +/-15vdc you can check it with NE5532s first since these are good opamps and very cheap or use drop in replacements to your taste.
You can compare the technical specs of the op amps looking for thing like dynamic range, noise, thd ans so on.
Personally I prefer the opas on higher voltages, but that's just my 2ct :)

Cheers,

Udo.

Edit:If I may tease you ab little bit go to the "Amp Head" build thread at Joe's homepage and scroll down to the end of the page, you can see my first one there. The psu looks a bit overkill since it was the smallest torroid I had handy,hahaha....but this piece is a great tool.

That's really a nice head-amp you've made. Big cudos  :)

From Joe's build thread:
Quote
+/-18v needed for NE5532AP and most dual type opamps

Getting that Powerstation is not a big deal, so I'll have +-18V and +-15V, and I guess the NE5532AP will be just fine.

Ooops,I made  a typo-pardon me.I meant +/-18vdc of course....although an NE5532 will work on +/-15vdc (operational range is from +/-3 to +/-20vdc),but that´s a different story ;)

Have fun with your built,

best,

Udo.

That's a pretty intense chain drive you have set up there...

Yeah, I wanted to use wire wound potentiometers for the volume control, but they are not readily available ganged together as a stereo pair, so I needed a way to turn two pots with one knob. I'm a mechanical engineer by training, so.... <g>

Do what works, I guess... What are the parts normally used for? small machines/ RC stuff?

Well.... you could build the O2 amp if you want small.

This is the actual amp I used. Input is LME49710, output is two LME49600.

The small plastic chain drive is for small control things I think. I got it from McMaster-Carr.
