I've just finished mixing a acid jazz/drum'n'bass project, i've used a m147 for the trumpet and a 421... recording trough a Soundtracs D4 to the Protools rig...

The 147 sounds good, colder than the 421 on the trumpet, good breath too..

Check this out: http://www.qtrio.ch/ (you'll find some samples...)

I think of the 149 and TLM103 as examples of how a good capsule grill design can be more important than the electronics. The electronics make a difference.

Maybe I will tube my 103 with a tricked out circuit, maybe a kit? People here do you think there is a market for that?

What would the m149 be like with a nice tube transformer gain stage. The new soundelux E49 looks like it might sound real good a kk47 type capsule and tube electronics and a well thought out grill for the design constraints

(neumann has a trademark on the grill design IRT came up with for the m49 If I understand the story)

I think a 103 mod kit sounds cool.

Klaus had to take back his suggestion that the rear kk47 diaphragm
in the 149 missed the tube completely and I seem to remember that someone posted a snippet of the tube part of the circuit on his forum.
I'm sure I've got it somewhere and it uses a 6111 with both halves
wired in parallel for low noise or something.
I borrowed one from Sennheiser when they first came out and found
it to be a very useful mic but not one with any outstanding magic so
a mod to one of them would be cool too.
I'd really like to have a go at that grille as well.

How I understood the posts at Klaus's after reading them. I can be wrong because I have not beeen inside a 149 to trace it.

The front skin goes to a tube charge amp circuit.

The rear skin goes to a fet amp of some kind.

The signals are mixed after both gain stages

The tube part is always in circuit because it is connected to the front of the capsule so they can say the tube is active in all patterns.

Yeah I think someone mis-traced the circuit as Neumann were
adamant that the rear diaphragm did go more-or-less directly to
the tube but it would be really good if someone could get access
to one for long enough to trace it properly as Neumann were obviously
trying to do things a little differently.
Shame sometimes these things seem to get overly and un-necessarily
complicated but this may be unfair as I don't know what they were
trying to achieve over and above create a quiet, precise mic.
