Ribbon Issues?
« on: July 28, 2012, 12:07:57 PM »
Not quite sure if i have a problem with my ribbon mic or not.  (i think its more the guitarists guitar...) but im noticing a lack of bottom end in the mic.  Things ive read say id notice a lack of HIGH and LOW end in the response.  Thoughts?

what ribbon mic? what guitar, what amp?
Every mic has a purpose it might be a door stop or a hammer, but every mic has a purpose.

Yes, which mic?

But generally, fig-8 ribbons have a big proximity effect, so should have plenty of bass close up. Lack of bass often means that the ribbon is not moving freely.

Could also be an impedance matching issue.

Cheers!

its a royer 121 infront of a mesa boogie 412 cab going into a Neve clone pre. (martins, no impedence switch)  The guitar had active pickups which sounded shrill to begin with (but even with all the treble pulled out at the amp it was still kinda shrill) the amp was a marshall 9100 driving a mesa boogie studio pre (old school rack version of a mark IIC i believe)

Generally, Royer 121 has less bottom end and more pronounced low mids, but still, if it is in front of the cab (within some couple feet) then you should get a nice and thick sound. If other ribbons connected to you pre are fine on that guitar and cab, then it is time for mic servicing.
