I have been trying to find the website someone linked to on the old site that had Neumann mic body replicas. I tried Googling but can't seem to find the place. Actually I was unable to find anyone that carries mic bodies. I am looking at just purchasing one or two for my G7's. I can make my own for sure but want to check out other options.

I sure hope we can get all the old posts over to here. Damn!

Thanks,
NWSM

 Just for the bodies?!?!? Or for the whole mic, inards and all?

Daniel

Thanks guys.

The microphoneclones was the site I was trying to find. I had no idea the prices were that high. I will have to inquire on the german tube mics prices. Looks like I will be DIY'ing them after all. It is more fun that way :green:

Thanks again :sam:

That high?
Microphoneclones quoted me $950USD (from memory)
for the U47 body!

If you call that expensive you are not uptodate
on current custom cosmetic metalwork.
I dare you to try to beat it. If you do let me know!

I looked at it as a U47 for less than 1K
My time is free!

I should have said that the price was too high for me. I am very aware of manufacturing costs and didn't mean anything negative regarding their pricing. :?

Hey guys,
anybody thought about producing a mic body kit for G7, or other mics??
It would be great for those of us who can't do metal work and don't have hundreds to spend in some of these expensive kits..
I wouldn't mind paying, say... $100-$200 for a half decent body.
just a thought...what do you think?

Gil, the Studio Projects C1 can be had for that price, and it has an excellent body with (I believe) plenty of room for the G7 PCB, and it has a nice capsule (kk67 clone) to boot (though it is only cardioid).

For around $350-ish you can get the C3 which is the same body and capsule, but is multi-pattern, so for the price of one AKG CK12 (new version) you could have the body and an excellent capsule.

my ego gets me in trouble, but Id love a plain machined body to build a mic in. I havent bothered with using a studio projects body or whatever because after I spend all that time and money making some awesome microphone, Im gonna have a client looking at a studio projects body. this SHOULDNT matter, but unfortunately it does. Most of my gear looks homemade and it sounds awesome and people go "ooooh". If I put all my awesome stuff in an alesis chasis I know Id have clients scratching their heads, people are way too impressionable. A homemade looking mic would be pretty awesome.

Who's got a friend with a machine shop? Anyone know what the first groove tubes MD-1 mics looked like? That would be a fine no frills style to use for inspiration.

Making the mic body isn't really all that hard. It's tedious work and you have to plan it carefully, but the only power tool I used was a drill press, and I could have done it with a hand drill and/or a dremel tool. It's like etching boards - it seems daunting until you actually try it and realize it's not that bad. I don't think it's a job worth a couple of hundred bucks to avoid, and you can spend a hundred dollars for a drill press and have it for future projects.

If I could find an extra 24 hours in a day I might be closer to doing some DIY...........including machining bodies. My problem is the workshop, including lathe is 160 klms away and doesn't look like being transplanted here for some time.

bar rail seems the cheap & DIY way to go:

Here are two of my current projects (not finished yet--need to be polished, etc.). The bodies and caps came from local pluming store. Price about $5 per microphone. On the top, my ribbon mic where the grill came from hair brush (no pencil holders anymore  ). On the bottom for a tube mic, with body of lolipop capsule from Astatic D104. Just waiting when have time to finish both.

Excellent work guys,
I still wonder if there is anybody that would be willing to machine these bodies for some bucks. I too prefer to have a brandless body against a MXL or studioprojects bodys. It would be very cooll if the body is long enough to accomodate for different mics. For example, the same body could be used for G7, or c800, or 251 clones. It would accomodate a lot of different people trying to make different mics....
any takers out there???
I know I would like to buy a well made kit...
Call me lazy, but I'm just not good with metal work..
peace

You know, i participate in a real nitty-gritty telecaster board at times, and one of the guys on the board started milling jack cups and other metal parts to match the 50-53ish guitars. I'll contact him and see if he might be up for milling some bodies for us (for a price). I'm sure we'd have to come up with the rough dimensions.
