Finally got around to posting a little update and a couple pics. I went with a 250k pot instead, and shortened the twisted pair of wires to about two inches. Also, put a Nytronics input transformer in and need to figure out a Zobel for it.

Now, I was looking at the couple of brief test clips I recorded (which are not worth posting) and realized that the top half of the wave form is clipped. I could definitely hear some distortion, but it sounded natural and pleasing to me not fuzzy or harsh. What could cause such half-wave clipping in this circuit? I'm going to get another tube to swap in, just in case.

I assume the output stage is parallel feed - is that right. I do have a nice big 2k4:600 output transformer. The coupling capacitor needs to be pretty big - in the region of 10uf or higher for a good bass response.
