This is too good to pass up. Probably the only way I'll ever get a ribbon - put me down for one.

Had mine apart. You wont find precision engineering here but it's robust and workmanlike. Three layers of pop shielding, a flux frame that looks like it's cast iron with two rare earth bar magnets. quite a wide and lightly tensioned ribbon. Potted tranny and room for a preamp.

Steve,
any chance you could take some inside pix for the ribbon mic dissection thread? I can host them if you like.

so are the mics mentioned on the Tape op forums the same ones?

how much are the mics going to cost vs. the ones over there?

Yeah..the same ones..I mean... it´s from the same factory in China..just branded for different company´s around the world..I highly doubt you´ll find much difference if any at all..these are typical sold as OEM Project´s.

Kind regards

Well, here's what I know on this front.

The PPA mic I saw in TapeOp has a different grill then the ones I've ordered, but I'm certain is made in the same factory.

Differences to Peters pics:

Instead of the cable coming out the back of the mic, mine actually has an XLR connector. A cable will be included with the package, but I like being able to swap cables if necessary.

The grill design will be the same as the one in Peters pics.

Other than that, I went with a protective bag, and an aluminum stand up case, as storing ribbon mics is best done with the element not laying flat (over time the ribbon will sag, I've heard).

As to pricing, my initial estimate was high. I still don't have an exact cost for shipping, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. At $70 a pop, I'd be losing money, so like MC Hammer, I can't touch that.

Here's a pic of what I've ordered ( they provided it, my order is sitting on a boat somewhere)

And Peter, thanks very much for the pictures!!

I won't know that until the boat arrives, I go down to the dock, and pay the nice man ( and the govt.) for the freight and customs.

I can estimate all day long, and it will probably be in the same ballpark, but I can't give you what I don't yet know.

Sorry I can't be more help as of yet.
